Ingredients
- Tart
- 1 Four Cheese and Herb Pastry
- 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp. honey or homemade hot honey
- Fresh thyme leaves
- Salt, to taste
- 9 slices gruyere cheese
- 1 egg, beaten
- Homemade Hot Honey
- 1 c. honey
- 2 tbsp. chili flakes
- 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper, optional
- 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
Step-By-Step Directions
- Remove the Four Cheese and Herb pastry from its packaging and set out to thaw for 2 hours.
- For the Homemade Hot Honey, combine honey, chili flakes, and cayenne in a saucepan. Heat on medium until it simmers then reduce to low and cook for 5-10 minutes.
- Remove from heat, stir in apple cider vinegar, and let cool. Strain out chili flakes if desired.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. While it is heating, unbraid the Four Cheese and Herb pastry. Remove the filling and place it in a bowl. Set it aside.
- Flatten and shape the dough into a square and set in the refrigerator.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and drizzle 9 small circles of hot honey on the parchment paper.
- Sprinkle thyme leaves and salt over each drizzle.
- Layer a slice of onion and 1-2 slices of gruyere cheese over each honey circle.
- Spoon a small amount of the Four Cheese and Herb pastry filling over the cheese and onion.
- Remove the pastry dough from the refrigerator and cut into 9 rectangles. Place one rectangle over each onion and cheese stack.
- Brush the tops of the pastry with a beaten egg. Then, bake for 12 minutes, or until golden brown and slightly puffed.
- Carefully, flip the tarts over using a spatula. Then, drizzle the tops with more hot honey and garnish with fresh thyme. Serve your Upside-Down Onion Tarts warm for a delicious treat.
Tips for Making Upside-Down Onion Tarts
- Upside-Down Onion Tarts are best enjoyed when fresh. However, you can make them ahead of time or save leftovers for later. Place the cooled tarts in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, place them in an oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes.
- If gruyere cheese isn’t your favorite, you can substitute it with sharp cheddar, fontina, or even goat cheese.
